The next installment! This is for the hydrangea, or ajisai. They bloom in the rainy season, so are primarily associated with that season.

This takes place in the Meiji Period, right around the same time as Sakura Hime, but in a different caste. She would be a merchant's daughter, most likely, experiencing the radical changes going on around her first hand. She wears the new hairstyle, the Sokuhatsu, which resembled the Gibson Girl hairstyle in vogue in the West at the time. She also has a 'batwing' umbrella from the west, and wears the new Azuma coat (which looks a lot like the modern michiyuki) that is a hybrid of Japanese and Western styles. I imagined that she would be very confused and a little afraid of all of the changes going on in the world she used to understand, and was watching the ajisai as she remembered when she was a girl and everything made sense to her. She got so caught up in her daydreams of visiting the ajisai when she was a girl that she got caught by the rain and became disheveled.

This piece was very nostalgic for me, because it resembled my Tsuyu Musume [link] so much. To be honest, that picture could have really represented the ajisai very well, but I didn't want to use it. I had to think about this one for a while so I could come up with something different, but still had the same feeling. I failed a little, since the pieces are obviously very similar, but I did try.

Wow, she is sooo pretty! And besides her, the ajisai look great - they must've taken a long time to ink!

FAQ #56: How can I get people to notice my art?

Masaya haters DON'T click here!
:iconfuyou-hime:
The ajisai were pretty monotonous, I have to say. I didn't have to focus on it, since the penciled-in petals weren't very visible underneath the paint. My hand started to cramp during the process, though ^^;.

Wow, watercolour pencils? Nice~, I can't get mine to colour smoothly like this... XD

"What's it like to be you? To be bathed in the sun it seems..."
:iconfuyou-hime:
They don't alway go smoothly, it depends on the pencil and blend of different colors used. Also, make sure you're using your watercolor pencils instead of your regular colored pencils. I've made that mistake, and then spent half an hour wondering why my colors aren't blending. After that, it's just a matter of experience and understanding your brushes and pencils.

Love how you've done the sokuhatsu, it looks soft and voluptuous.

I'm trapped in this world
lonely and fading
heart broken waiting
for you to come
we are stuck in this world
that's not meant for me...
:iconfuyou-hime:
That was actually my third attempt at the sokuhatsu. My first one failed, and my second attempt was ugly. I had a hard time trying to make a hairstyle I find fairly unattractive beautiful, but I'm glad I finally succeeded.
