Koyoshi had her misedashi, or debut of as a new maiko, in which she wore her most formal kimono and presented herself to the ochaya (tea houses), okiya (geisha houses), and local stores to thank everyone for supporting her. During misedashi, a maiko will wear special kanzashi (hair ornaments) made of tortorise shell that is only worn for this special occasion.
The Darari Obi is the style of obi worn by maiko. A special obi is needed for the style which needs to be about 25ft in length to gain the desired look. When done correctly, both ends of the knot should reach close to the maiko's ankles.
Not yet, Koyoshi still has about three years to go before she would become a geisha. There is also the option that she would quit without becoming one, but I really hope she doesn't do that. I think she'll make a marvelous geisha.
It isn't rare for a maiko to quit, but as for how often they do that depends on the district in question. From what I've seen, both Gion Kobu and Gion Higashi seem to have the highest rates for maiko quitting. I couldn't say exactly why any maiko would quit, but probably the two biggest reasons are just how tough it is and making enough money.
A lot of shikomi have an idea of how hard it is, but they may not realize exactly how hard it is until they become a maiko. Others might become disillusioned over time, and only see the hard aspects of the career. Others might want to be geisha but aren't skilled or popular enough to make enough money.
Koyoshi has gotten over the hardest bit, she lasted through her first year as a maiko. If she decides she wants to quit, she'll probably wait until her contract as a maiko is over, which would be a few years from now. I really hope she doesn't do this, I think she has what it takes to be a good geisha .
Okiya do try to take care of maiko and help them find clients, but it's also a competitive business and some maiko are shining stars that grab everyone's attention and others are not. A maiko might not be particular skilled, clever, popular, or even outgoing, and will not be particularly sought after. Clients request which geisha they want at their parties, they usually don't ask for just any geisha. So, if a maiko hasn't developed a large pool of customers by the time her apprenticeship ends, she may very well not make enough money as a geisha to survive. There's only so much an okiya can do, there has to be something about the maiko that makes her interesting other than the fact that she's a maiko.
