For Hina Matsuri, I went to Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto to see the Hina Dolls and this Junihitoe presentation. The Junihitoe (also called Karaginu mo) is the clothing of the nobility of the Heian Period (794-1185). Seeing as I could go on and on about Heian Period garb, I'll just reccomend a site for those who might only be casually interested, [link] .
The Hiogi is the type of fan used in the Heian Period, which was made of cypress boards and held together by silk. A Heian Noblewoman's most important accessory was her fan. It was used primarily to hide her face, as it was incredibly improper for her to show her face to an unknown man. |
