A friend of mine from a kimono forum we both visit took a vacation to Kyoto, and so I guided her through the Shijo area of Kyoto. We visited Yasaka Shrine, Chionin Temple, Maruyama Park, Gion Kobu, Miyagawacho, Pontocho, and Teramachi in lots of different orders and turn-abouts.

Iro Iro literally means 'color color' but the intended meaning is various... so, 'Iro Iro no Iro' means various colors... and is just really fun to say. The more junior a maiko, the more colorful her ensemble. So, first-year maiko Kyouka here is wearing a very colorful ensemble.

It was very beautiful. The maiko and geiko in the Tsurui okiya are always so stylishly dressed .

Oh, no kidding. What I wouldn't give to be able to afford the whole ensemble. I would love to own a truly vintage kimono, but I can't afford it. If I could, that would be so neat! :faint:

Vintage kimono can be bought for decent prices, depending on how you go about it. They come up on ebay and Japanese auction sites pretty regularly, and depending on certain circumstances, they can be bought for cheap. This site will lead you to the kimono section on ebay [link] (where along with big sellers like Ryu Japan selling vingtage kimono regularly, estate sales and attic finds come up for good prices), and this site is Crescent Shop [link] , an English site that helps you navigate Japanese auction sites. I've gotten vintage kimono from both sites for good prices... for geisha and maiko's kimono though, that doesn't come cheap I'm afraid...

Aww. Thanks for the links. Heehee, I figured their kimonos were super expensive.

Sometimes people can get maiko and geiko kimono for what collectors would consider cheap prices, but that's around the order of $150-$400. So, it's still not exactly cheap, even though collectors would consider that a pretty good price.

Vintage kimono, though, can go for very decent prices, well below a hundred dollars :).

That is true. I did take a look at some of the offerings and there are certainly some beautiful ones out there. Whew, $400 is a lot of money to me. ;) I would admit that it's better than paying thousands, though.

$400 is a lot for me, too, which explains why I don't have a lot of geiko's kimono.

I love her kimono, it's awesome. And that obi... what a lovely, awesome ensemble. This should go on the "most stunning ensembles" thread on IG :P
:iconfuyou-hime:
It really is a great ensemble. I was so happy to get this shot.

I might have to put on that thread :).
